Basic Feeling HK

“Basic Feeling Hong Kong” is a handmade wooden object and a highly experimental photobook project. Working like a rolodex, 160 photos shot in Hong Kong are attached to a barrel, flying by the eyes of the viewers as the winder is turned. The faster the winder is turned, the harder it gets to tell the photos and their subjects apart, mimicking the overstimulation experienced in the world metropolis. As a reference to the many market stalls selling antiques in Hong Kong, the appearance of the object was altered by synthetically ageing the wood and brass. The pictures were printed on East Asian paper used for calligraphy and the edges torn for a more authentic look.

„Basic Feeling Hong Kong“ ist ein handgemachtes Holzobjekt und hochexperimentelles Fotobuch-Projekt. Das Objekt funktioniert wie ein Visitenkartenkarussell, wobei 160 Fotos, die in Hongkong gemacht wurden, an einer Trommel befestigt wurden und an Betrachter*innen vorbeifliegen, wenn die Kurbel gedreht wird. Je schneller gedreht wird, desto schwieriger wird es, die einzelnen Fotografien und Motive auseinanderzuhalten. Dadurch wird die Reizüberflutung, welche die Künstlerin in der Metropole erlebt hat, nachvollziehbar. Als Referenz zu den Flohmärkten in Hongkong wurden das Holz und Messing des Objektes künstlich gealtert. Die Fotografien wurden auf ostasiatischem Kalligraphie-Papier gedruckt und die Ecken angefeuchtet und gerissen, um einen authentischeren Ausdruck zu kreieren.
